Turkey Prices Surge Due to Avian Flu, but Thanksgiving Meal Costs Dip Slightly
Wholesale turkey prices have jumped approximately 40% this year, driven by avian flu outbreaks and broader agricultural economic challenges. Retailers, however, are countering the trend with DEEP discounts to attract holiday shoppers.
Despite the spike in turkey costs, overall Thanksgiving meal expenses are projected to be 2% to 3% lower than last year, particularly for those opting for store-brand products. Walmart and Kroger are leading the charge with budget-friendly bundles, offering complete dinners for under $4.75 per person.
The American Farm Bureau Federation highlights the disconnect between wholesale and retail pricing, noting that supermarkets use turkey as a loss leader to drive foot traffic. This strategy keeps Thanksgiving affordable even as production costs rise.
